How is sound used to create regional identity
in Darling Buds of May?
Dialogue,
throughout the section there are specific words and phrases used which reflect
the regional identity. “Perfic” “Ma” “Pa” and “Lovely” which reflects the moods
of the characters being relaxed and happy this also supports the stereotype of
people who are living in the country being positive people. This compares to
the man from London who is very clear with his speech and almost has Received Pronunciation.
Secondly the music which is used, firstly for the Londoner on the bus it is
very sharp and stubborn sounds used in the music to reflect how he is very up
tight and very into his job and is professional. This compares to the music
used after the bridge when the family are driving. As the family vehicle is rolling
up into the driveway of their house, we hear ambient sounds of cows, goats,
chickens, geese and this shows how they are in a rural area and working on a
farm, this may actually be trying to link to the family being un intelligent and
may refer to them being like animals. The engine on the vehicle is rattling
which may also show how they are not rich and can’t afford to get a car which
is particularly good quality.
